Honor brings blessings

Scripture

1Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2“Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise— 3“so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.” Ephesians 6:1-3

Observation

This the first commandment with a promise – literally from the 10 commandments. Why was this one set apart so clearly to be the one with a promise? It must have such great significance and influence in our relationships and life itself. First, we notice that obedience to parents begins “in the Lord”. It is not just to obey them but in doing so we are obeying the Lord Jesus. Then it specifies to “honor your father and mother”. To honor (timao) means to value, revere and to prize. God was serious about children valuing their parents enough, revering them and to prize them enough to obey them. The implication is that if we really honor our parents – we will obey them.

It’s interesting to note in our day and age that God specified to “honor your father and mother”. This is very clear to God and to us that the family is composed of a father and a mother and a child or children. There is no other distinction but this for the family.

Now here comes the promise – “that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on earth”. So there is a condition to things going well for you, it is to honor your father and mother and obey them. Long life is also promised to those who obey their parents in the Lord and place a high value on them enough to honor them.

Application

I wonder how many people could have things go so much better in their lives and live much longer if they would have just obeyed and honored their parents? It seems like disobedience causes such harm in so many areas: relational breakdown, emotional stress and duress, mental guilt and harmful negative thinking, physical problems as a result of the stress, spiritual disconnect with God, and so much more. It is not just a good command, but again it is so helpful to our whole life to simply honor and obey parents. We are just helping ourselves

Prayer

God I’m so thankful for my children who are still so honoring and obedient to Diane and I. I’m sure so much of the good that has happened in their lives is because of this. Lord thank you for your commands – for they are not burdensome but bring about such blessings, health, and life to the full.

Heard in prayer

You have set an example for your children to follow. This is the way that I have planned to bless families and children. Pass this on to everyone possible and train children to do the same.
